클래식 음악이 귀족들의 문화적 사치로 여겨지던 1741년, 헨델이 소외된 이들을 위해 작곡한 메시아(Messiah)는 교회음악의 대작으로 남았고 이는 훗날 하이든이 천지 창조를 작곡하게 한 중요한 모티프가 되었다. 음악으로써 하나님의 말씀과 뜻을 전하고 있는 SGM헨델연구소는 헨델의 음악과 정신을 이어가는 음악연구기관이다. 아시아에서는 유일하게 한국에서 설립된 SGM헨델연구소 김은정 소장을 만나보았다.
하나님의 음악이 당신의 삶을 변화시킬 수 있다면
2008년에 설립된 SGM헨델연구소는 하나님 사도들이 뜨거운 열방 사역을 진행하고 있는 SGMLAND(대표: 황수희 전도사)의 12단체 중 하나다. 가난하고 불쌍한 사람들을 위해 자선음악회를 열고 사후에는 재산 전부를 장학금으로 남긴 헨델처럼 헨델연구소의 음악은 낮은 곳을 향하고 있다. 김은정 소장은 “헨델의 메시아와 기악곡, 그리고 폭넓은 클래식을 전해드리면서 음악 속에 담긴 하나님의 말씀을 전하고 싶습니다.”라고 말했다. SGM헨델연구소는 헨델의 음악과 정신을 연구하고 또한 사랑과 나눔을 위한 사역의 공간이다. 매년 2월과 10월, SGM헨델연구소는 SGM꿈땅장학회와 함께 정기연주회 수익금 전액을 캄보디아 프놈펜과 씨엡립의 불우한 아이들에게 필요한 물품으로 전달하고 있다. 음악적 재능은 있지만 가정 형편이 어려운 청소년들에게 장학금을 전달하는 <비전청소년장학금>, 캄보디아 길거리의 아이들에게 클래식을 들려주며 학용품과 악기를 전달하는 <캄보디아 길거리학교>, 가족 모두가 음악으로 하나 되게 하는 <사랑나눔음악회> 등은 음악이 우리 사회를 위해 할 수 있는 일을 뚜렷이 보여주고 있다. 김은정 소장은 “헨델이 메시아 공연을 통해 거리의 고아를 도왔던 것처럼 우리 연구소는 음악을 통한 선교를 실천하고자 합니다.”라는 뜻을 전했다. 5년이라는 짧은 기간 동안 SGM헨델연구소가 SGM앙상블, SGM심포니오케스트라, 나훔(Nahum)합창단으로 자리 잡을 수 있었던 것은 연구소의 뜻에 동참하고자 하는 선한 사마리아인이 우리 사회에 많다는 얘기다.

아시아 유일의 헨델음악 연구기관으로 음악적 기틀 다져
헨델의 고향인 독일 할레(Halle)에 헨델협회가 있고 헨델이 47년간 거주했던 영국에 헨델협회가 있지만 동양에서는 SGM헨델음악연구소가 유일한 헨델 음악연구기관이다. 헨델음악에 대한 전문성이 강한 만큼 진행사업 및 중장기적인 계획 또한 헨델에 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 정기연주회에서는 헨델의 음악을 집중적으로 연주하고 있으며 헨델의 메시아가 주요 레퍼터리였던 베를린 북한 동포돕기 자선음악회의 기획을 후원한 바 있다. 또한 헨델의 수상음악을 생동감 넘치게 연주하는 선상(船上)음악회를 비롯해 독일 현지에서 헨델의 오페라와 음악회를 진행하는 사업도 계획 중이다. 2008년, 독일 유학 직후 황수희 대표의 권유로 SGM헨델연구소를 이끌게 된 김은정 소장은 “SGM헨델연구소의 음악이 단 한 명이라도 삶에 변화를 가져오게 한다면 그것으로 족합니다.”라며 “피아니스트로서 SGM헨델연구소에서 음악을 할 수 있게 해 주신 하나님은혜에 감사하고 있습니다.”라는 말을 잊지 않았다. 김은정 소장은 현재 동국대 음악원에 출강하고 있고 상명대 겸임교수, 유나이티드 신학대 반주과 교수로 재직 중인 실력파 음악가다.

SGM헨델연구소의 음악은 오늘도 독일 베를린의 어느 거리, 필리핀의 오지, 서울역, 당산역, 선릉역 등 무대가 있는 지하철 역사에서 사람들에게 감동을 전해주고 있다. 메시아를 작곡했을 때 하늘에서 천사들이 내려오는 것을 보았고 하나님을 보았다는 헨델의 예술혼이 오롯이 남아있는 곳, 그곳이 SGM헨델음악연구소이다.

Fulfill love and share with Handel’s music spirit

In 1741, people regard the classical music as a cultural luxury. Back in those days, Handel composed ‘Messiah’ that is a great work for the church music for the neglected people who could not enjoy that music and later, this was an important motif for Haydn to compose ‘The Creation’. With music, the SGM Handel Institute is trying to propagate God’s words and his evangelism and also it is a musical institute to study Handel’s music and its spirit. So, Power Korea met a Head director Kim Eun-Jeong of SGM Handel Institute that is in only Korea in Asia.
If God’s music can change your life
The SGM Handel Institute that is established in 2008 is one of 12 organizations made by SGMLAND (CEO Hwang Soo-Hee), which is doing a missionary working earnestly. The attitude of SGM Handel Institute is quite humble just like Handel did open a free music festival for the poor and pitiable people and left his asset for them after his death. Therefore, the SGM Handel Institute is a place for carrying out for love and share and studying his music and spirit.
Every February and October, the SGM Handel Institute is opening the regular recital with SGM Ggoomttang Scholarship Foundation and it sends all the money and some stuff from that performance to poor children in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Cambodia. This is not all about it. The SGM Handel Institute also gives scholarship to young students who have the musical talent but are poor, which is called Vision Youth Scholarship and there is a Cambodia Street School, which is playing the classical music for children who are in the streets and providing school supplies and musical instruments. For the Love, Share music concert is another example to show to us how much they are doing something for the people by music.
Head director Kim Eun-Jeong said, “Handel helped many street orphans with his Messiah concert. Like he did, the SGM Handel Institute would like to do work a missionary work by music. On the other hand, for 5 years that is a bit short period of time, the SGM Handel Institute could settle down with SGM Ensemble, SGM Symphony Orchestra, and Nahum Choir, which means there were many good Samarians who wanted to join them in this society.

Strengthening the musical base as the only Handel Music Institute in Asia
There is the Handel Association in Halle, Germany where Handel was born and another Handel Association in London, England where he lived for 47 years but there is no other like the SGM Handel Institute in Asia. So, during the regular concert, we can listen to Handel’s music mostly. They used to support a charity concert in Berlin, which was to help North Korean people and the main repertory was about Handel’s Messiah.
Also, the SGM Handel Institute is thinking of the concert on the ferry that they would play Handel’s water music lively and doing the project of his opera and concerts in Germany. In 2008, Head director Kim Eun-Jeong was recommended by CEO Hwang Soo-Hee to lead the Institute right after her studying in Germany. “If our music can change even only one’s life, it is enough. I really appreciate God for giving the chance to play the music at the SGM Handel Institute as a pianist.” Actually, she is teaching at the music school, the Dongguk University, the Sangmyung University and the United Theological Seminary as a professional musician. Music of the SGM Handel Institute might be somewhere like a street in Berlin, backwoods in Philippines, Seoul Station, Dangsan Station or Seolleung Station today. Especially, subway stations that have a stage give them space all the time to move people in there.
In other words, the SGM Handel Institute is the place where Handel’s art spirit, which is he saw angels from the sky and saw God when he composed Messiah.
